Project Summary
Pro Steel Engineering was appointed by the Welsh Rugby Union and Wire & Sky to deliver the steelwork for the SCALE rooftop attraction at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. The project involved the design, fabrication, and installation of over 160 tonnes of steelwork to create a unique adventure experience including rooftop walks, a zip line, and a controlled free-fall drop, all while preserving the integrity of Wales’s national stadium.
The Challenge
The Principality Stadium is one of the UK’s most iconic sporting venues, hosting rugby, concerts, and international events. The challenge was to transform the stadium into a year-round visitor attraction without disrupting its primary use. Works had to be carried out during the winter months, under harsh weather conditions, with strict safety requirements for both workers and future users of the attraction.
Our Solution
Pro Steel Engineering worked closely with partners to develop bespoke structural engineering designs and calculations, converting them into manufacturing drawings for fabrication in our South Wales facility. We fabricated and galvanised more than 160 tonnes of steel, then installed the structures safely and efficiently despite challenging weather. Our project management team coordinated closely with stakeholders to ensure the project stayed on schedule and delivered a world-class visitor experience.
The Outcome
The attraction opened successfully, offering visitors the chance to climb, zip line, and free-fall from the stadium roof. The project not only enhanced the stadium’s tourism offering but also generated additional revenue streams for the WRU. SCALE has since become one of Cardiff’s most exciting adventure experiences, demonstrating how engineering and tourism can combine to create lasting impact.
