Project Summary
Pro Steel Engineering was appointed to deliver the structural steelwork for Manchester Airport’s new Pier 2 development, part of a £1.3bn investment to expand Terminal 2. The project involved fabricating and installing 1,400 tonnes of steelwork, including Fixed Link Bridges, Node Buildings, and staircases, while minimising disruption to one of the UK’s busiest airports.

The Challenge
The airport required a large-scale steel solution that could be delivered within a live operational environment handling over 100,000 passengers per day. The project had to meet strict deadlines and minimise disruption to airport operations.
Our Solution
Using a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) kit-of-parts approach, Pro Steel Engineering fabricated major steel components at its South Wales facility. Instead of delivering thousands of smaller parts, construction was broken down into just 67 sub-assemblies, allowing much of the work to be completed off-site.
The Outcome
This approach reduced on-site build time from 110 days to just 12, prevented 125 tonnes of CO2 emissions, and kept airport operations running smoothly. The project demonstrated the efficiency and sustainability of modular steel construction in the aviation sector.
